Sculpture has been a constant in Erika Groeneveld’s work for many years. In 2001 Erika graduated from Art College Ch. Constantijn Huygens, in Kampen with a combined degree in teaching and sculpting. In 2010 she followed her heart and moved to Macclesfield from The Netherlands and dived straight into the vibrant Macclesfield art scene.
After a few years of working in other media, Erika rediscovered her love for three dimensional art, and we suspect the medium of assemblage will be explored for a while longer. Erika often finds her inspiration from her unexpected encounters with nature, and in the odd obsession. She finds the tension between man and its surrounding world fascinating. Equally exciting to her is discovering that same wonder in others.
When not sculpting, Erika paints (acrylics), and also enjoys doing commission work; often the medium gets chosen depending on the story that needs to be told. Her innate curiosity helps with understanding the customers request. “I love digging deep and seeing their smile when they receive the result they asked for.” For the past four years Erika has run a weekly portrait club in The Snowgoose, where artists take turns in modelling and quick sketch each other in 10 minute sessions. This allows for continuously practicing her skills in drawing and observation.
